After all if he hadn't been such a pain then I may never of happened onto the best candy in the world - Zotz Sours. From that day forward Zotz Sours was my favorite candy and I made a conscious effort to spend at least a little time with my brother. I popped one in my mouth and I bit it and even though it was sour it was the best candy I ever ate. He opened the pack and chomped one then another until they were all gone! I was amazed even more when he asked for more. I acted as if I was angry and finally said sure. As I was walking home the store he came running after me asking if he could have some of what was in the bag without even knowing what it was. I thought to myself, that if these were horrible enough, maybe he would think twice about always having to have everything I had. The lady behind the counter told me they were terribly sour. I went to the local candy store one day and just happened to see a candy named Zotz Sours. I finally felt I needed some way to stop this tag-along in his tracks. This, of course, didn't sit well with an older, more worldly boy of ten, such as myself. Anything I did he had to be right beside me and everything I had, he wanted. I was three years older than him and it seemed like all he wanted to do was be under my feet. Growing up with a little brother was, at times, trying to say the least. Zotz are an Italian made candy that were first introduced into the US in 1968. It looks and tastes like a regular hard candy, but when you bite into the center there is a sour fizzing taste because of the powder reacting with saliva. These were a huge hit because they had so much powder in the center.Zotz is a candy with a fizzy, sour center. You can see the powder inside and we thought it looked pretty cool! With assorted flavors like blue raspberry, cherry, apple, orange, grape, and watermelon, you’re sure to love the delicious taste of each and every Zotz. Originally developed in the 60s, Zotz is an old fashioned candy favorite. The root beer was a huge hit but we liked how the lighter colors looked. They’re perfect for giveaways, goodie bags, and just about any occasion. We had fun using our different flavor oils. Let the candies harden completely before you remove them from the molds. ![]() How big you make the indent will depend on the size of your candies/molds and how much fizzy powder you want to add to each candy.Īfter you have added the powder, make another batch of the hard candy and carefully add another layer over the tops of the candies to seal in the fizzy powder. Yowza!!!Īfter the candy gets firm, push an indent in the center using the end of the knife or wooden spoon. Go ahead and scoop up a little bit and put it on your tongue. You just mix baking soda, citric acid (you can find this in the canning section at the store) and powdered sugar. I was surprised how simple the fizzy powder was to make. We don’t have simple candy molds so I tried to find some that weren’t too big. The first batch you use to fill up the molds about half way. You can use the recipe we have posted here or the one we used for our Slimy Slug Candy (which was a huge hit, BTW.) In order to do this correctly you have to make 2 batches of the hard candy. We searched the internet on how to make them and I was so excited that I found the instructions on ![]() So what do we do? See if we can make them, of course. We have to buy them at the retro candy stores at the coast or at the little, family owned movie theater here in town. But they aren’t sold in the grocery stores around here anymore. It’s been around since 1968 and has been a kid favorite for decades. The powder is “activated” by saliva (liquid) so when you are sucking on the candy, it all of a sudden fizzes and is totally strange. Zotz Fizzy Candy is a hard candy with a sour, fizzy powder on the inside. My daughter and her friends love Zotz Fizzy Candy.
